Lead Free: Research Groups

NEMI The National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative, Inc. (NEMI) web site. NEMI has a Pb-free task force that is examining:

  • Solder Reliability
  • Components
  • Soldering Process
  • Sn Whiskers

HDPUG The High Density Packaging Users Group web site. HDPUG has efforts focused on lead free assembly of electronics and halide free electronics.

JEDEC The JEDEC Solid State Technology Association (Once known as the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council), is the semiconductor engineering standardization body of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA), a trade association that represents all areas of the electronics industry. Held a joint conference with IPC entitled INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON LEAD-FREE ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS AND ASSEMBLIES, May 2002.

NCMS The National Center for Manufacturing Sciences has conducted research efforts in evaluating manufacturability and reliability of lead free assemblies. The organization has reports (CDROM) available for purchase.

NIST This National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST) web site provides an on-line database for solder properties emphasizing new lead-free solders.

SOLDERTEC is based at ITRI Ltd, the world technology centre for tin, and a pioneer in lead-free soldering research. As a centre of excellence, SOLDERTEC will provide information products and a leading-edge research portfolio to the lead-free soldering community.

TURI The Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell conducts research, education and training programs about toxics use reduction (TUR), helping businesses, institutions, communities, and government agencies to incorporate TUR strategies into their day-to-day operations. The Institute's staff of analysts, engineers and educators provides support in the development of policies and the delivery of training to reduce the use of toxic chemicals and the generation of hazardous wastes.
