CALCE Electronic Part Obsolescence Article Appears in IEEE Spectrum

A feature article entitled “Trapped on Technology’s Trailing Edge," discussing the technical and logistical challenges posed by obsolete electronic parts appeared in the April 2008 issue of IEEE Spectrum. The article provides a high-level introduction to the obsolescence problem describing how maintaining critical systems is becoming increasingly difficult when the parts they depend on are only available for a small fraction of the system’s lifetime. The article discusses currently practiced reactive management approaches for dealing with obsolescence and the benefits of strategic management solutions. A follow-up “Talking Tech” interview with Peter Sandborn about technology obsolescence was published in the April 29, 2008 Wall Street Journal.
